Grow Box Method for Growing Indoors

It is a great way to grow cannabis indoors and away from stranger’s eyes. Some people say itgrows better indoors that outdoors. You need to build a grow box, light and ventilation systems, temperature and humidity sensors. The growbox must be light-insulated and have a reflective inner wall covering. You can use foil or other reflective materials.

The minimum area for a single plant is 30x30cm with 40cm height.

Normal area for a single plant: 50x50cm with 150cm height.

The more light plants receive, the faster they grow. 

Lamps should be located close to the tops of plants, but they should not touch them to avoid burns. The height of lamps needs to be adjusted as the plants grow. The best lampsfor the vegetative stage are IPF with blue spectrum. They increase the chance of the appearance of female plants. The best lamps for flowering are DNT and DNZ with red spectrum.

 

IPF - Metal-Halogen Lamps

IPF lamps are halogen lamps with blue spectrum. They are the best for the vegetative stage because they increase the number of female plants. 

To use the IPF lamps you need additional equipment - ballast and IZU (Impulse Charger). Remember that lamps get warm. Such lamps are widely used in the illumination of billboards, exhibition halls, sports facilities, lighting of buildings, as well as in winter gardens and greenhouses. The IPF lamps have two different types of burners: ceramic and quartz. In comparison with quartz, the ceramic lamps provide more stable light but that are more expensive.

 

High-pressure sodium lamps – DNT

Many farmers prefer DNT lamps withyellow-red spectrum but remember you need a great reflective coating inside your grow box. DNZ is similar to DNT, except that the upper part of the bulb is covered with mirroring, which makes it possible to use a lamp without an external reflector.

DNT lamps are effective sources of light. They have the highest efficiency among all known lamps. They also have long service life. They are used in urban lighting, high-speed highway lighting, open spaces, lighting of tunnels and underground passages, architectural lighting, lighting of production and storage facilities.

 

DNZ - high-pressure mirror sodium lamps

DNZ Lamp (Reflux) is a high-performance sodium lamp with an internal mirror coating. DNZ lamp has good service life. It gives good illumination and brightness. Compared to DNT, mirror DNAZ are better option.

 

Combination of lamps (DNT, DNZ, IPF)

Different lamps can be combined. To build a good lighting system, you need to check the insulation and phase matching, use quality components and wires. When installing the lamps, make sure they are clean. Electricity can be expensive so you need to use efficient lamps.

You also need to buy ballasts and we recommend single-wound chokes. It is better to buy quality equipment,PRA or IZU.

The complete set of electric equipment includes lamps, ballast, PRA, IZU, cartridge, wires. You can buy it at the nearest store for a total cost of about $50.

Some electric equipment can be expensive. You can look for used equipment and reuse it. If you are a handyman, that you can try DIY.

As you know it takes 3-5 minutes for a lamp to light up and than another 2-10 minutes to reach full power. The current can exceed the nominal value by almost 2 times (an increase of 30-90%). The operating current of the lamp is 250W 3-5A. 

 

Reflecting

The purpose of the reflectingcoating inside the grow box is to reflect light. The lamps are very hot during operation (~ 400° C) and with reflection temperature can reach above hundred degrees (even with cooling system and ventilation). You can use foil o iron sheets for reflection. Any the internal (reflecting) surface is polished or covered with several layers of white heat-resistant paint reflects almost as well as polished aluminum. The paint should be matte.

You should keep the lamps close to the plants but avoid burning them. The reflecting surface should be smooth. Ventilation system should pump hot air via air ducts out. You can add holes in the grow box for better cooling. You should avoid overheating and install a fan inside the box. The opening for the air ducks must be big and a fan should work continuously while the lamps are on. The ventilation should work during the vegetative and flowering stages. Remember, the powerful lamps get very hot during operation and they need to be cooled down with ventilation.

 

DNT /DNZ lamps have ~ 15000 hours of life capacity.

DNT

You can use DNT lamp but you need to ventilate your growing box well. You can also pinch some holes in the roof. The electric equipment includes a choke, a chaser, a chuck, and a fastener.
